De stad… Een samenkomst van geld, innovatie, goede leefomstandigheden en cultuur. Afgezet tegen een heel ander beeld van de stad: een van armoede, buitenwijken, vuile straten en smog. Beide schetsen zijn de realiteit, bepaald door ruimte en tijd. 

In de eerste maand van 2023 onderzoeken wij De Stad als fenomeen in 5 uiteenlopende films. Hollywood Klassiekers en Kriterion Klassiekers zetten de Stad uiteen in al haar glorie in al haar teloorgang. In al haar potentie en in al haar impotentie. Een impressie van steden door de tijd heen, het leven van inwoners en de ratten op de grond.

The city… A confluence of money, innovation, good living conditions and culture. Set against a very different image of the city: one of poverty, suburbs, dirty streets and smog. Both sketches are reality, defined by space and time.  In the first month of 2023, we examine The City as a phenomenon in 5 diverse films. Hollywood Classics and Kriterion Classics expose the City in all its glory and in all its decline. In all its potential and in all its impotence. An impression of cities through time, the lives of inhabitants and the rats on the ground.  The following 5 films are on the program:

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

A former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster returns to the Lower East Side of Manhattan 35 years later, where he must once again confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life. 

Taipei Story (1985)

Lung is a former member of the national Little League team who lives with his old childhood sweetheart Ah-chin, a traditional family woman. Although they live together, Ah-chin is weary of Lung’s past liaison with another girl.

Playtime (1967)

Monsieur Hulot curiously wanders around a high-tech Paris, paralleling a trip with a group of American tourists. Meanwhile, a nightclub/restaurant prepares its opening night, but it’s still under construction.

Touki Bouki (1973)

Mory, a cowherd, and Anta, a university student, try to make money in order to go to Paris and leave their boring past behind.


Toute Une Nuit (1982)

Following over two dozen different people in the almost wordless atmosphere of a dark night in a Brussels town, Akerman examines acception and rejection in the realm of romance.
