Valentine drives a dog. She takes him to the owner, a retired judge. He is a single-minded man who seems to care little for the dog. He spends his time eavesdropping on his neighbors’ phone calls. Valentine wants to warn them, but refrains at the last minute. She realizes that she is not really doing those people a service, but is doing it for her own peace of mind. It is the judge who questions the selflessness of her actions. A friendship develops in which they know and understand things about each other without needing to be spoken.
