Shadow Game is a coming-of-age story following the journey of young refugees through Europe. The documentary shows us how these teenagers develop as young adults under the extreme circumstances they face, travelling from Greece to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina to Italy and the Netherlands. Through its mosaic storytelling we discover the universal experience of the youngsters fleeing to Europe.
For three years directors Eefje Blankevoort and Els van Driel followed multiple young refugees during their trip through Europe. The phenomenon of unaccompanied children fleeing to Europe is not new. But because many European countries have closed their borders, the associated risks have become extremely high. The teenagers cross mine fields and snowy landscapes, they face the agressive border patrol, everything to get to their country of destination, which is harder than ever. A part of the footage has been filmed by the youths themselves.
After the film there will be a talk and Q&A with directors Els van Driel and Eefje Blankevoort.
This screening is part of Movies That Matter On Tour. Movies That Matter is a non-profit foundation that aims to open eyes to human rights, using film to stir debate. The films are screened in combination with discussions, introductions and a Q&A session.
