Shabu (14) is a sweet, creative and street-smart boy from Rotterdam-Zuid. After he totaled his grandmother’s car during a joyride, his whole family was angry with him. He has a summer to make up for it, before his grandmother returns from a vacation in Suriname.

His mother suggests that he sells popsicles to pay for the damage with the proceeds, but that doesn’t work. So he comes up with another solution that combines the attractions of the sultry summer, his musical talent and earning money. Would he be able to make his family, but especially his grandmother, proud again? “I am a little boy from Peperklip,” Shabu describes himself, referring to the famous (and infamous) building in Rotterdam-South in which he grew up. The film’s lively narrative and playful editing highlight the contradictions of adolescent life: unpolished when life is raw, and a little polished when it needs to shine. A funny and touching film about a boy who seems bigger than he is, and about taking responsibility for your actions.
