This expressionist classic, by master filmmaker Fritz Lang, is told in the futuristic city of Metropolis, a city that is run for the benefit of the ruling aristocracy on the exploitation of a disguised working class.
Freder, Mayor Joh Fredersen son, discovers the poor conditions the workers are working in and falls in love with the charismatic worker leader Maria. The leadership of Maria, however, poses a threat to the privileged ruling class: for this reason Joh enlists the help of scientist Rotwang to develop a robot that looks exactly like Maria in order to take her place. The film is widely considered as groundbreaking within the science fiction genre and most controversial in Lang’s entire oeuvre.
We have chosen to show the restored version from 2010. This special montage (also known as “The Complete Metropolis”) is renowned for its 25 minutes of extra visual material, which has not been seen since 1927.
Introduction (English): Prior to the movie, UvA Professor of “Artificial Intelligence” Max Welling will provide a short introduction.
