Wong Kar-wai’s quintessential love waltz, widely regarded as an unsurpassed portrait of restrained, passionate sensuality.

Guided by Wong’s favorite DoP Christopher Doyle’s cinematography, In the Mood for Love makes you a witness of the rhythm’s of deep, unspeakable feelings. The invisible dance between Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) — two neighbors sharing a 1962 Hong Kong apartment building. After catching on to the love affair of their respective partners, the two find excuses to comfort each other. The ensuing love flares up, but the feelings are kept in line.

In the Mood for Love is praised for it’s cinematography, editing as well as it’s acting. The stylish dressing, the immaculate appearance of Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, along with the vibrant jewel-tone colors and atmosphere of Doyle’s photography made the film monumental in aesthetic satisfaction. The film makes the defining extension of Wong Kar-wai’s poetry on the melancholy of the heart: a stunning ode to forbidden love and a lyrical exploration of yearning.
