Black Cat, White Cat is a romantic black comedy film directed by acclaimed Serbian director Emir Kusturica, described as a mad scramble through the Felliniesque realm of Kusturica’s imagination, set in a culture whose intricacies are rarely captured on film. Amongst others, the film was praised for its convincing portrayal of Serbia as a social and architectural ruin, as well as for satirizing the Eastern European film conventions of rural magic realism as much as embracing them. Black Cat, White Cat went on to win the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival.

This screening is part of our Kriterion Zomeravond (Kriterion summer evening) 90’s Yugo Comedy Night. The other screening in this programme includes 1997 Macedonian comedy Gypsy Magic.
